In Year 6, we have been learning about the life and work of Yinka Shonibare, a British-Nigerian artist, who has overcome disability to become a highly acclaimed artist, known for a variety of artistic techniques. We focussed on his collage work as inspiration for our own art work, in particular his piece called ‘Line Painting’.

We learned that Yinka Shonibare often chooses to use African fabrics for his mixed media work so we designed our own patterns and painted our own fabrics influenced by African fabrics.

Inspired by the work of Yinka Shonibare, we have created our own collages. Using the fabrics which we designed and painted  as well as African fabric from Nigeria, old atlases and a range of other self-chosen materials,  we created these fantastic artworks with the theme of ‘Identity’.

What does your collage say about you, Year 6?

I also enjoyed the art because it was really fun making two designs of Fabric and using them on our collage , I was really happy with my fabrics and we got to use different material to make our collage!

I enjoyed doing a collage , since we created something about ourselves. In my collage I included the French flag as well as the fabric I made. I hope we can do this again soon.

We took inspiration from a famous artist, Yinka Shonibare, who managed to produce wonderful artwork half paralysed!! he is a great role model, who shows as that we can do anything when we set our minds to it.

Making the collage was so much fun!!! My collage shows how happy and joyful I am, I am grateful for my friends, where I come from and that I like animals. This was a great project so thank you to the teachers organising it.

  29. My collage says about me is how I think outside the box. It helps me to truly see how my creative side inspires me.
