Year 1 have started an exciting new topic in computing – Moving a Robot!

Today we had a discussion about what robots are, where we may see them and how robots move or complete a task that humans want them to do! We talked about the fact robots are like computers, and in order for the to work they have to be programmed or receive instructions called ‘commands’. These commands are like a special code for the robot to process, before it can move or complete a certain task.

The robots we were looking at in class were Beebots! Special small robots shaped like bees, they have a transparent plastic body where you can see all of the wires and mechanisms inside. On the top of each Beebot are buttons, that the children had to learn to press in the order they wanted the robot to move, but not forgetting to press the command of GO at the end. We learnt that the Beebot cannot move without a direction to move in a direction, but also they cannot move without the GO command at the end of the command sequence.

Before we used the Beebots we played ‘Robot Says’, to understand the importance of using the right commands with our robots, we practiced moving around the space following commands! Then the children sat at their tables and took it in turns to put a sequence of commands into the Beebots! Each table had a challenge to see which table could be the first to choose the correct commands for their Beebot to spin in a circle!

To finish off our fun lesson the children had Beebot races in groups! This was a great way for children to see the effect of their commands on their robots, and see how many ‘forward’ commands they needed for the Beebot to reach the finish line!!

Well done Year 1, this was a great lesson and so much fun learning about how to move a robot!
