Today was lots of fun in Year 2 as we became chefs and food critics all in one lesson!
This term in Design and Technology, we have been learning about healthy diets and what makes a balanced meal. We began by planning and preparing our ingredients carefully, thinking about how our wrap could include foods from different groups.
First, we prepared our vegetables and practised our chopping skills. We used lettuce, peppers, cucumbers and cherry tomatoes. We then chose our protein filling – roast ham, chicken or tuna – before selecting a dairy option from hummus, mayonnaise or cheese.
We made sure to listen carefully to Miss Guled, who reminded us about chopping safety and the correct techniques for preparing and wrapping our food. Once all our ingredients were ready, we carefully assembled our wraps and practised rolling them neatly – which was trickier than it looked!
After making our wraps, we became food critics and evaluated our creations together. We:
- listed the ingredients used,
- smelled the wrap and described it,
- looked carefully at its appearance,
- tasted a small sample and talked about the flavours,
- checked whether our wrap met the design brief by including protein, dairy, and fruit or vegetables.
We then gave our wraps a score out of five based on how well they met each part of the evaluation.
We were incredibly brave when trying new foods and discovered that everyone enjoys different tastes and textures. It was a fantastic way to link our Science learning about healthy eating with our Design and Technology skills.
A big thank you to Miss Lee and Mrs Barbieri for helping us during the lesson – and for helping tidy up afterwards!
What a delicious learning experience – that’s a wrap!
