Today we began thinking about our new Shared Reading text for this half term in English, ‘The Undefeated’ by Kwame Alexander and Kadir Nelson.

The undefeated is a narrative poem all about the struggles and achievements of African Americans throughout history.

But before we could read the poem, we needed to learn more about African American history. The class defined some key vocabulary that we would be discussing such as: segregation, racism, civil war and slavery throughout our study of ‘The Undefeated’.

We then watched a video about a special group of African American children who went on a trip to New York. They lived in Oklahoma, a segregated state, where black and white people were not allowed to do normal every day things like use the same water fountain, restaurants or schools. However in New York, there was very little segregation. The children were stunned! They wanted to stop segregation and racism in their own community.

They decided to stage peaceful protests called ‘sit ins’ where they asked to be served in white only restaurants and stayed there until they were. It took a long time but eventually, one by one, the restaurants began to serve African Americans.

We then discussed the history of black Americans and the American Civil War between the Confederate and Union States. Not all white people wanted segregation and many fought against it. But despite this, segregation remained in many Southern American states for a long time.

Year 4 looked at various images of African Americans in their everyday lives, as well as famous images from civil rights protests. We thought about the aspects of life that might have been segregated, like shops, cinemas and even Church.

We enjoyed captioning the various images in our books and thinking about some questions we still have and would like to find out more about in this topic.

Well done Year 4 for all of your sensible questions and respectful discussions.

What is something you enjoyed learning about in this lesson?

  2. Mr Kersys says:

The thing I am enjoyed this lesson is talking about if people couldn’t do things that other people could do, and if people got the same rights as others.

  3. Mr Kersys says:

    That was Rafael!

I enjoyed learning about how the american African black people made sit-ins in restaurants and did things they knew they’d be sent to jail for so that people would treat them fairly. I found this quite brave because they knew that they get heart but they still stayed calm.

  6. I enjoyed the lesson was about that no matter the look of someone doesn’t matter is because it’s all about the inside not the outside I also learnt is that you should treat everybody fair and NOT TO only let white people into lots of places and to always BE NICE!

  7. I enjoyed learning about black people like Martin Luther King JR and the video was very inspirational I liked the lesson👍👏

I loved this lesson. l learnt and discovered lot’s of interesting facts
Knowing that people in other countries are not lucky like us and are treated badly

  9. I think no matter what skin colour someone is ,everyone should be treated fairly. We should also treat each other how we should be treated.

  10. The thing I enjoyed in English was when we found out that black people were not allowed to do things and that a little girl changed the life of many black people so that it was fair for black people in America so they can do the same thing as white people.

I learnt that you should treat everyone equally and not judge them by their look😢😭😫

Also, if it does happen you should find your way out and tell them to stop 🛑

And remember you are unique and can do things the way you want👍🏻

  13. I enjoyed cutting out the pictures and learning about the past. It was not fair that people were treated differently because of the colour of their skin.

  14. In this lesson I learnt that black people would not be treated the way white people were treated just because of the skin👍🏿👍🏻 Also I learnt that you have to be kind to others no matter how they look or the way the pronounce words.

  15. I learned that we all are different from other people although we should still be able to do the same thing.Black people should be able to do the same thing that white people do.

  16. It was interesting to learn about how white people mistreated black people. Also, I think we are lucky that now everyone is treated fairly.

  17. Mia🥸😎🤓 says:

I have a question 🙋‍♀️ do black people still get treated different in other places and countries❓❓❓

  18. Sophia Becci 😎 says:

I liked learning about how Black African people in America were not allowed to do the same as white American people .For example drink from the same water fountain and go to the same restaurants. No matter what colour your skin colour is or where you come from we should all be treated fairly!
