On Monday, Year 1 were very lucky to take part in a Mini First Aid training session. The children thoroughly enjoyed learning important skills that could help them care for others in an emergency.

We began by discussing what first aid is and why it is important. The children confidently explained that first aid is given when someone has been hurt. They also shared their knowledge of what might be found in a first aid kit, including plasters, cleansing wipes and ice packs.

Next, we learnt how to help a friend who has fallen over and hurt themselves. The children discovered that the red liquid that comes out of our bodies is called blood and that we want to keep it inside our bodies! They learnt that a cut should be cleaned before a plaster is applied. Everyone had the opportunity to practise cleaning a ‘wound’ and carefully applying a plaster to their partner.

We then talked about head injuries and why they should always be taken seriously. The children learnt that if someone bumps their head, it is important to ask two key questions: “Do you feel sick?” and “Do you feel dizzy?” These questions can help us understand whether the injury might be more serious.

The session also taught the children what to do if someone becomes unresponsive. They learnt that they should call the emergency services by dialling 999 and asking for an ambulance. The children enjoyed practising how to make an emergency call, confidently sharing their names and home addresses using toy phones.

We finished our session by listening to a story about Freddie, who knew exactly what to do when his mum needed help and called the emergency services.

It was a fantastic session, and the children learnt many valuable first aid skills that will help them know how to stay safe and support others in an emergency. We are incredibly proud of how sensible, engaged and enthusiastic they were throughout the training.
