This half term in PE, our invasion game is Football and in today’s lesson, the focus was on passing. We demonstrated how to use the inside of our foot to pass the ball and how much weight to put on the ball depending on how far away our team mate is. The closer our team mate is, the less weight we should put on our pass because we want our teammate to control the ball easily.

We were organised into small groups and in circles we had to pass the ball to a different team mate every time we received the ball. We understood that before we pass the ball we had to make sure we had the ball under control and we made sure we said the name of our team mate we were passing the ball to. This was to make sure the right person knew to be ready to receive the ball.

This activity was made more challenging by adding a defender into the centre of the circle (otherwise known as ‘piggy in the middle’) so each player passing the ball had to make sure their pass couldn’t be intercepted and the player receiving the ball had to control the ball well otherwise the defender would clear it. This speeded up the decision-making because now there was much less time to control the ball, choose a teammate and play the pass. We all had to be extra concentrated now because our names weren’t being called out when the ball was coming our way.

Next, it was time to put our passing skills into practice by playing matches. We were reminded of the importance of making ourselves available for our team mates to pass to by finding space and moving into it. We enjoyed putting our skills into practice and the class was divided into 4 teams with 2 matches being played simultaneously. It helped that the weather was perfect for PE: nice and sunny but not too hot!
