The children have had another fantastic week of learning, and it has already been a brilliant start to the year! We have been busy settling into our routines, working hard and enjoying lots of exciting learning opportunities together.
We have continued reading Escape from Pompeii and have been exploring the sights, sounds and experiences of life in Pompeii. The children wrote their own sensory descriptions, using expanded noun phrases and precise vocabulary to bring their writing to life. We then moved on to direct speech, using drama and role play to help us understand how characters might have spoken and felt in different situations. The children have really enjoyed getting into character! In Maths, we have been working with numbers up to 1,000. We have been practising partitioning numbers into hundreds, tens and ones and exploring where different numbers belong on a range of number lines. The children have been developing their understanding of the value of each digit and explaining their mathematical thinking. In Religion, we explored the story of Abraham and how God called him to become a blessing to others and to make him a father of many nations. We learned about the importance of a covenant and what it means when two parties make a special promise or agreement. We focused particularly on the covenant God made with Abraham and thought about why this promise was so important to God’s people.
In the Wider Curriculum, we had a fantastic Roman-themed launch afternoon! We were each given our very own Roman name and made a Roman crown to show our importance. We then designed and created our own Roman shields, before finishing the afternoon with a Roman banquet! We have also started learning about how Rome became an Empire. We have discovered that Rome did not become the great empire we remember overnight; it took many years to grow, develop and evolve. We have begun exploring some of the key events and decisions that helped Rome expand and become one of the most powerful empires in history.
