This week was Islam Week and Year 4 have really enjoyed learning about the Holy Qur’an, the Muslim Holy book, in our Religious Education lessons.

We began the week with a fantastic assembly delivered by an Imam who works near Manchester and he told us about the 5 pillars of Islam, or the 5 most important things that every Muslim must do in their lives.

Year 4 learnt the pillars off by heart very quickly and asked some thoughtful questions about Islam such as what is inside the Ka’bah and why do some Muslim women wear a hijab.

We then discovered more about the Qur’an which forms a part of Salah (prayer). The class enjoyed learning about how the Qur’an was sent down to Prophet Muhammed (PBUH) by Allah through Angel Jibril.

The Qur’an is the most special book to Muslims and is treated with great honour and respect. It is kept above any other book in the home and never put on the ground. Muslim people have a cover with intricate designs of nature or geometric patterns to store their Qur’an in as they are not allowed to create images of God or the Prophets. Year 4 created their own covers and even had a go at some calligraphy of ‘Allah’ in Arabic.

Later in the week the children learnt about how children begin to study the Qur’an at a young age at the Madrasa. We watched some videos about the importance of the Qur’an to their daily lives of Muslims. We then read the opening Surah of the Holy Qur’an and analysed how it shaped Muslims belief in one God and their trust in Allah to guide them along the straight road.
