This week in Reception, we have continued our learning around our class text, We’re Going on a Bear Hunt by Michael Rosen. Over the past few weeks, we have really enjoyed exploring the story, joining in with repeated phrases and actions, learning new vocabulary and developing our confidence when retelling the events.
We have been thinking carefully about the different parts of the bear hunt and using descriptive language to talk about what the family experienced. The children enjoyed describing the settings using words such as ‘long’ grass, ‘cold’ river, ‘thick, oozy’ mud and ‘sticky’ mud. We also practised putting the events of the story in the correct order and created our own story maps to help us retell the journey from beginning to end.
We also spent time thinking about the bear itself. The children talked about what the bear looked like and used ideas from the story to describe it. They then created their own bears, colouring them brown and using different materials, including brown card and paper, to add texture and detail to their fur. To finish them off, we added ‘a black, shiny nose’, just like the one described in the story.
Alongside this, we thought about the bear’s feelings and why it chased the family. The children shared their own ideas about how the bear might have felt when the family entered its cave and began to explain their thinking using reasons.
It has been lovely to see the children becoming more confident storytellers as they use actions, descriptive vocabulary and their own ideas to bring the story to life.
