Year 3 started our poetry unit today! We will be looking at the collection of poems from I Am the Seed That Grew the Tree. These poems are all about nature! We started our lessons by looking at different features of poetry. We decided that some poetry features were repetition, personification, similes, metaphors, rhythm, and rhyme, just to name a few!

After we had to match some vocabulary to the correct definition. There were quite a few tricky words, such as borne and shrill, but we persevered and were even able to come up with a sentence using most of them!

Then, we read the poem The Garden Year by Sara Coleridge. We identified some of the poetry features we had been learning about, like rhyming and personification. Finally, we got to practice performing the poem in pairs to an audience! Some of us chose to sing the poem, while others came up with actions for the stanzas. It was such a brilliant lesson that allowed us to really practice our performance skills. We can’t wait to continue learning all about poetry and eventually write our own poems about nature next week!

I loved doing some actions or some voices for our poetry lesson. It was so much fun. I hope we get to do that again.
