This week in Religious Education, we have continued exploring our topic, To the Ends of the Earth. Our core question for this unit is: How does the Holy Spirit transform people to live as followers of Jesus, especially through the Sacrament of Confirmation?

During our lessons, we have been developing our understanding of the Sacrament of Confirmation and the important role of the Holy Spirit within it. We explored the different signs, symbols and actions used during the rite of Confirmation, including the laying on of hands, anointing with the oil of chrism, the words “Be sealed with the Gift of the Holy Spirit” and the sign of peace. We learned that these gestures are not simply actions, but outward signs showing something deeper and invisible taking place through God’s grace.

To demonstrate our learning and understanding, we created detailed guides to the Sacrament of Confirmation using specialist religious vocabulary to explain the meaning behind each symbol and action. We made thoughtful links between Baptism and Confirmation, recognising how Confirmation strengthens Christians in their faith and discipleship.

In today’s lesson, we deepened our understanding of the Holy Spirit by exploring the symbols used to represent Him in the Bible. We discussed how the dove represents God’s presence and peace, wind represents the unseen power of the Spirit, and fire symbolises courage, energy and transformation. We linked these symbols to key moments in Scripture, including Pentecost and the Baptism of Jesus, and reflected on how Christians today continue to be guided by the Holy Spirit.

How do the signs and symbols of Confirmation help Christians understand the invisible work of the Holy Spirit?
