This half term, we have started our new topic within Religious Education of Local Church. Our theme is all about books. To begin this, we spoke about different books that we see at home and at school and spoke about some of our favourites. We discussed why we like books and what we can learn from this. We even had a think about what a world would be like without books!

We then spoke about the most important book to Christians, which we knew was the Bible. We learned about the fact that the Bible is God’s special book and is all about how much God loves and cares for people. As the Bible is the most special book to Christians, it is important that it is treated with reverence. This means that it is always treated with care and respect.

On our knowledge planner for our new topic, we noticed an image of the Bible which separated it into two parts. We spoke about the Old Testament and the New Testament and learned that within these, there are 39 books in the Old and 27 in the New. The Old Testament is the first part of the Bible which holds stories about a time before Jesus. The New Testament contains the four Gospels which teach us about the life of Jesus, and the other books teach us about the beginning of the Church and the way in which we should continue to live our lives.

We then shared some stories from the Bible, such as the Creation Story, Noah’s Ark, Jonah and the Whale, and Joseph and his Wonderful Coat, from the Old Testament. We also spoke about the story of the Annunciation, which we learned during our Nativity, the Wise Men arriving in Bethlehem, and the miracle of Jesus feeding the 5,000 with just five loaves of bread and two fish.

We had some time to reflect on the importance of God’s words and thought about our favourite story from the Bible. We wrote down which was our favourite and why and then illustrated this with beautiful water colours which will then decorate our Religious Education display in our classroom.
