This afternoon, Year 6 were invited to Queen’s College School to take part in two special Science Workshops, linked to the Science topics we have studied this year so far.Β

One Workshop was all about Classification. We had to think carefully about how to classify and why classification is important. We were given a challenge to classify Sebastian the axolotl! We were told he was either a fish, an amphibian or a reptile and then used statements about Sebastian to classify him using a Venn diagram. This was not as straightforward as it sounds, as axolotls have some characteristics of fish, amphibians andΒ  reptiles. We learned that they are amphibians but are unusual among amphibians in that they reach adulthood without undergoing metamorphosis. We loved seeing Sebastian in his tank in the classroom, which really brought the challenge to life.

The other workshop was all about the circulatory system. We loved putting on special lab coats and goggles for this one! First, we made models of blood with water, foot colouring and different foods to represent plasma, red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. Next, we were allowed to investigate real animal hearts to learn more about the features of the heart. We were even allowed to dissect the hearts using very sharp scalpels!

We had such a good time and were able to consolidate so much of our prior Science Learning. Thank you so much to the staff at Queen’s College for providing us with such exciting Science opportunities. We really appreciate it.

Going to Queens college was really fun as we got to use there science lab and act like real scientist. I really enjoyed the part when we were in the lab and we made our own blood and touched a really sheep heart which was a bit disgusting but fun. Thank you to the teachers for organising this fun trip and experiencing being real mad scientist!

Science in Queens college was so fun. I have learnt that there was one thick chamber out of the 4 chambers in the heart. We saw that queens has a pet axolotl called Sebastian and it was our job to work out if it is a fish, an amphibian and a reptiles . After all that discussion we found out that he was a amphibian . I really enjoyed this trip and I learnt different thing . I hope you can learn the same things as year 6 did. Thank you for the volunteers who helped us.
