This week, we have been celebrating St Vincent’s Book Week!

As part of this week, we have been really fortunate to visit Daunt Books where we could cash in our World Book Day vouchers for a brand-new book. We really enjoyed the opportunity to spend time with our friends, and lovely parent volunteers as we browsed the shelves in such a beautiful bookshop. We had twelve books to choose from, which ranged from non-fiction texts about incredible brains and creepy crawlies, to fiction texts like Boot It and a Dragon Realm. There was even a book called Dave Pigeon, which lots of us thought looked really funny!

Today, we celebrated our own St Vincent’s Book Day where we came in a huge range of costumes from our favourite books. We were greeted by our teachers and were initially confused by their costumes! We then found out that they were dressed as characters from a book called Somebody Swallowed Stanley and we were excited to read this text to find out more. We enjoyed an assembly where we could parade around in our costumes and show off our favourite books.

After this, we went to Year 1 to learn about the Snail and the Whale with Miss Pycroft. We practiced our character descriptions and used some great adjectives to describe our two main characters. We then came back to Year 2 to read Somebody Swallowed Stanley and we then practiced our comprehension skills to demonstrate how much we had learned from the text. We discussed the importance of looking after our wonderful planet, linking back to poor Stanley and the sealife that accidentally swallowed him. In this, a whale (with a mouth as vast as a cave), a seagull, and a turtle mistook Stanley, the plastic bag, for a jellyfish! The turtle in the story began to choke and splutter and lay on the shore, feeling helpless. Thankfully, a kind boy came to the rescue and saved the turtle, and freed Stanley. He then turned Stanley into a kite, where he could be safe from the creatures below. We know that people should bin or recycle their bags as a way of stopping this from happening!

Later, we enjoyed a visit from Perform Drama where Joanna taught us the story of the Wizard of Oz, through freeze-frames, music, and song! We had such a great time learning the story in this way and enjoyed walking down the yellow brick road in the silliest way we could. We would like to say a huge thank you to Joanna for the time that she spent with us!

We ended our day by welcoming our siblings, parents, and family members into our class as we read and shared some of our favourite stories. We really loved this time with our family members and would like to thank them for coming to school to spend this time with us.

Thank you so much to Miss Jones for organising this special week for us. We have absolutely loved it!
