Today we had a very exciting assembly lead by Mr Patel from Aveea.

Aveea Academy love STEM and Mr Patel reminded us that STEM stands for:

SCIENCE

TECHNOLOGY

ENGINEERING

MATHS

We started by looking at cardboard and how flimsy it is. Yet, through careful engineering, Mr Patel showed us that we could make a model that was strong enough to hold a little box so we tried a really heavy box and it held that too. So then we wanted to test it further and tried a child and we couldn’t believe it, it held her! We learnt that engineers are required to build so much, such as bridges, trains and roads.

Next, Mr Patel showed us spheros. These are small round robots that you control by coding what you want them to do. We had a race in the hall and the blue one won!

We were then shown some sodium bicarbonate, glue, food colouring and an activator called borax. The activator starts an endothermic chemical reaction, which we learnt means that it takes in the heat from its surroundings so it feels cold, while the reaction is taking place. It was amazing to see Mr Patel making his own slime!

After seeing some amazing engineering, technology and science, Mr Patel asked if we had seen any maths. It was so interesting to reflect and see the maths in all of these experiments – reading scales, measuring, angles, counting…maths was everywhere!

Thank you Mr Patel for coming in to inspire us and make us all so interested in STEM!

Look out for a leaflet coming home about a new after school club where you can do more experiments and investigations that build on your STEM knowledge. When the email and timetable come out for the Spring term clubs, you’ll be able to book this new club on Arbor.

I loved the assembly! I am one hundred percent joining the club in January. It was amazing and very cool because they taught us a lot about science, technology, engineering and maths. Some that I know some things I did not know. Either way it was amazing that they used their time to come to our school to tell us about stem. Thank you Mr Patel, I am so grateful. I mostly enjoyed the workshop that year5 had because we got to make bath bombs.

  3. Thank you Mr. Patel for this wonderful assembly. I can’t wait to join STEM in January. I also LOVED making Bath bombs.
