This week in Maths, Year 4 have been exploring lines of symmetry within polygons. We began by investigating what a line of symmetry actually is and discovered that it is a line that divides a shape into two identical halves that are mirror images of each other.
To build on our understanding, we revisited regular and irregular polygons and discussed how their properties affect the number of lines of symmetry they can have. We carefully examined a variety of 2D shapes, drawing and identifying their lines of symmetry before explaining and justifying our thinking to our learning partners.
Later in the week, we put our knowledge into practice through a hands-on challenge. Working collaboratively, we used lollipop sticks to create and complete symmetrical figures. We had to think carefully about the position of each polygon to ensure that both sides of the line of symmetry matched perfectly. Some of us found this task quite challenging, but we showed excellent resilience, teamwork and problem-solving skills to overcome any difficulties.
Well done, Year 4, on a fantastic week of mathematical learning! I have been impressed by your enthusiasm and perseverance with symmetry. What was your favourite part of Maths this week?
