Last week you showed me your excellent prediction skills when you saw this picture:

This week I am going to show you the result of the experiment! Read these questions and have a think.

1. What has happened to the celery?

2. Was your prediction correct?

Have a look at this video to help you understand how the water travels up the celery.

There are little tubes in the celery that suck up the water and move it to the top of the celery. It is like you drinking from a straw!

I would like you to write a sentence on what you conclude – this means what has happened to the celery at the end of the experiment.

I conclude that _________________________________

My prediction was correct/incorrect.

I look forward to seeing your comments!

  1. I conclude that the celery took the colour from the water. My prediction was correct. We did it at home and we will send you some pictures.

  2. Miss Travers says:

I am looking forward to seeing the pictures!

  3. I conclude that the celery grew taller and changed colours. My prediction was correct. I liked this experiment.

  4. Miss Travers says:

I’m glad you enjoyed the experiment!

  5. The first thing I noticed is that while the celery grows from a small bit to a big bit, the water changes colour while the celery grows. One of the colours is blue and the other two are red. At the beginning the colours were red, yellow and blue. The stem is green like before. But the leaves are the same colour as the water that it drank.

My prediction was right. I thought the celery would grow and change colour.
The video I watched was interesting and exciting. I felt sad for the celery with no water.

  6. Miss Travers says:

You have showed excellent observation skills! Well done!

  7. I predicted that the celery would grow because plants need water to grow and change color. My prediction was correct. ?

  8. Miss Travers says:

    Well done!

  9. The celery is because we’ve put it in the blue water and the celery went in the orange water. The leaves are going redish and the celery went in the red water and the leaves of the celery are orange.

  10. Miss Travers says:

    Well done Juliet!

  11. I conclude that the celery drank the water and it did change colour.
    My prediction was correct.

  12. Miss Travers says:

    Well done Isabella!

  13. I concluded that when you put the celery in the coloured water it changes colour, all plants need water, sun and soil to grow.
    My prediction was correct.

  14. Miss Travers says:

    Well done Julia!

  15. I conclude that the celery absorbed the coloured water, thus it changed its colors.
    My prediction was correct.

  16. Miss Travers says:

    Well done Jaidee!

  17. I think the celery will turn into a nice beautiful plant. The celery is much taller and the leaves are different colours.
I conclude that the leaves took the water from the food colouring and the leaves sucked it up. The water was sucked up by the stem.

  18. Miss Travers says:

    Well done!

  19. I conclude that the celery absorbed the colour from the water. My prediction was correct.

  20. Miss Travers says:

    Well done!

  21. I concluded that the leaves changed colour because the coloured water was sucked up to the leaves by the roots. The leaves were red, and orange.

The celery leaves in the clear water stayed green.

The celery with no water does not grow and it wilts.

My prediction was not correct because I thought that the stems would change colour and not the leaves.

  22. Miss Travers says:

Well done Jacob! Even scientists don’t get their predictions correct all the time! You have thought about this experiment a lot!
In the stem of the celery there are little tubes and they suck the coloured water up the celery so it reaches the leaves so you are correct about that!
Imagine if you were drinking from a straw that’s what the little tubes do inside the celery!

  23. Gabrielle says:

I conclude that the celery has turned into the colour of the water and that was my prediction.

  24. Miss Travers says:

    Well done!

  25. I predict that the celery will change colour because the celery will drink the colour water. I conclude that the flower and stem changed colour. My prediction was correct.

  26. Miss Travers says:

    Well done Flavia!

  27. I predicted that the celery will grow and change color.
I conclude that the celery grew and changed color because it drank the water from the glass.

  28. Miss Travers says:

    Well done!

  29. I conclude that the celery grew taller and grew some leaves. The leaves changed color and the water changed color as the celery grew. My prediction was wrong.

  30. Miss Travers says:

The coloured water stayed the same, it just travelled up the celery stem and into the leaves.
Inside the celery there are little tubes that suck up all the water. It is like you drinking from a straw.

  31. The first celery didn’t grow, instead it wilts because it have no water. And the rest grow because it had water.

I concluded that my prediction is right because the celery sucks in
    the water and colour.

  32. Miss Travers says:

    Well done Fabi
