    William Hunt:

I think that William Hunt’s style is really amazing because in the painting ‘Lady of Shalott’,
the woman’s top looks like it is shining even if it is not shining. His paintings look very realistic
because there is lots of fine detail, and the colours are warm.

    Christ and the two Marys:

In this painting, I can see Jesus standing infront of two woman which I think are both called Mary because of the title, ‘Christ and the two Marys’. I can also see a rainbow around Jesus that I think represents that He is the light or rainbow of the world.

Thank you Gabriella. I look forward to posting your artwork on here once you complete it!

  3. I prefer William Hunt’s paintings because I think he uses colour unlike Robert Smirke who just paints people ,which I don’t like. Also I think William is a better artist because he has more detail and texture in his paintings. In the picture by William Hunt above I see a circular rainbow which I think represents that God is everlasting. I think that the man might be Jesus trying to heal the person at his feet or he/she might be praying or worshipping Jesus or God.

Yes Sara, his paintings were usually of small size and painted in monochrome. I can see why you would prefer William’s more colourful paintings.

  5. William Hunt was a Pre-Raphaelites. The Pre-Raphaelites were a Realist group formed in Paris 1848 by English painters and poets. They felt nostalgic about the past, and thought that industrialization was damaging society. The group looked back to a time before the Italian painter Raphael, calling themselves the Pre-Raphaelites Brotherhood. They followed Botticelli an artist whose work emphasized colour and detail. The Pre-Raphaelites believed that art had moved in the wrong direction since the time of Raphael at the start of the 16th century. They thought Raphael’s emphasis on old classical forms had made art artificial, and objected to the way that he was celebrated as a great master.

William Holman Hunt was an English painter and was one of the people that started the Pre-Raphaelites Brotherhood. His paintings were well known for having lots of attention to detail, vivid colour and symbols. They were influenced by the writing of John Ruskin and Thomas Carlyle. William Hunt never changed his mind about being a Pre-Raphaelite unlike some of the other founders. He published an autobiography in 1905, in the same year he won the Order of Merit award by the king.

Thanks for this Claudia. In future it may be easier for you to share what you have read online by summarising it in your own words 🙂 Do you like his art? What do you think of it? Which painting is your favourite? What about the painting I shared above?

  7. William Hunt

I like William Hunt’s style because he does a lot of self portraits of him and his family. I like to try and do self portraits of myself and others. What I also like about his work is that there are lots paintings of Jesus. In this painting by William Hunt, I see a girl on the ground kneeling to someone laying, worshipping or begging. It looks like Jesus as he has a circle around him with a rainbow, which probably represents that God is never ending and brings colour to people’s lives.

Thanks for sharing your opinion Dylan. I also like his representations of Jesus – they are very powerful and insightful.

  9. Hi Everyone

I prefer William Hunt’s pictures because they express more how he feels also he uses a variety of different colores in his paintings ?.
William Hunt also does lots of paintings with his family and portraits of himself.

Elena please could you rewrite the first paragraph with full stops? There are quite a few missing and I am finding it tricky to read.
What do you think of the painting I shared above?

  11. William Holman Hunt was an English artist, he was known for his detail, his vivid colour and his elaborate symbolism. He was once called William Hobman Hunt but after he found out a Clerk had misspelled the name at his baptism at the Anglican Church of St Mary the Virgin, Ewell, England. I like his style because there is always a lot happening in them and there is a lot of colour in his paintings. He does landscape and Portrait.

  12. Mrs Avdiu says:

Thank you Iggy. Wow, I did not know his name was misspelled! How funny!
