Good morning, Year 5,

I hope you had a lovely weekend.

I am missing you all a lot but I really am so proud of how well you have all adapted to learning from home. I hope you all know how much you are missed and hopefully we will be back at school soon!

Today’s English focus: Reading.

We will continue with the extracts from POG this week before moving on to something different next week. If anybody does end up getting their hands on this book, please let us know what it is like! Unfortunately, we do not have access to the whole book right now.

You can learn more about the author here.

Please read the Prologue again: POG PROLOGUE

  1. Hello everyone, I hope that you all enjoyed your weekend. Here are my answers for the questions:

    * I think that Pog is friendly because in the text it says ‘Who are you?’ She asked, her lower lip trembling. ‘Pog Lumpkin. A friend’ which shows that he is a friend who is safe. The girl new that she was safe and trusted him which shows that she could trust him because she knew he was friendly.

    * I think there was a flutter in Pog’s chest because now one had spoken his name in years and that she had asked if he was alone.

    * I think that was Pog was disappointed because she had just closed the door on Pog and went inside and didn’t think to invite him in or even tell the man how she had got home.

I am going to the challenge in book now so I hope that you all enjoy your day, bye!

  2. Mrs Avdiu says:

Thank you Elsa. Let me know how you found the challenge! 🙂

  3. Mrs Avdiu says:

    Oops! You ok there Zavan?

  4. Hello everyone! I hope that you have had a great day so far!
For today’s English task I came up with these answers!
    Have a look :

    1. Yes, I do think that Pog is friendly. In the text it says ‘ Who are you?’ She says, her lower lip trembling. Then Pog replies by saying ‘ A friend.’ This means that Pog is not dangerous instead he is a kind and caring creature.

    2. There was a flutter in Pog’s chest because nobody for a long time , had spoken his name. Also, the girl asked Pog if he was OK.

    3. Pog was disappointed because the girl that he had become quite close with him had just closed the door on him. She didn’t bother inviting him inside and, like Elsa had said, the girl didn’t even tell the big, tall man how she got home. This is what made Pog extremely disappointed ?.

I am doing the challenge now.

Mrs Avdiu, should I post the answers that I got for the challenge here? Or should I not? As I don’t want people to copy what I wrote and pretend that they did it themselves.
    Let me know.

    Thanks ?
    ~ Nika ?

  5. Mrs Avdiu says:

Hi Nika, you don’t need to post the answers on here. Just let me know how you found it 🙂 Good luck!

  6. Mrs Avdiu says:

Also, thanks for reading other children’s comments and responding. Well done!

  7. Hi Everyone,

    1) Yes, because he helped the girl find her way back from the forest and ‘he slowed down for her in case he lost her’. He also spoke in a really gentle voice to try not to scare her.

    2) There was a flutter in his chest because he was really happy as ‘no one had spoken his name in years’.

    3) I think that Pog was disappointed because the girl didn’t think of introducing him to her dad or because he might not see his only friend/person he’s seen in years.

I will do the challenge my homework book!

  8. Mrs Avdiu says:

    Well done Marco! Enjoy it!

  9. Hello Everyone!

I hope you have all had a fantastic weekend and I hope and wish that you are all safe and well. ???
For today’s Comprehension task/English task I have read all of the links Mrs Avdiu gave me and I have answered the comprehension questions. ?

    1) As I read the Pog Prologue I came across this answer: When the girl was lost she asked “who is there” and the Pog answered “A friend” so that makes sense because maybe Pog wanted to be friends with the girl so that explains why he is so friendly.

    2) In the text when it says ’ There was a flutter in Pogs chest’ I assumed that Pog was just hungry or maybe he wanted to go home but that was not the right answer is you read don from that line it says ‘ No one had spoken his name in years’ so when I read that line I began to notice that Pog was confused because the girl spoke his name the first in years.

3)I think Pog was disappointed ? because the human had not invited him in the house or they had not let Pog in, I also think he was disappointed because he had not had a chance to tell the human that it was him that saved the little girl from the forest ?.

Well now I am going to do the challenge in my book
I hope you all have an amazing day

    Bye

    ~Elena ???

  10. Mrs Avdiu says:

Thank you Elena for your very polite and friendly posts- I really enjoy reading them. I have had a good weekend, thank you – how about you?
I’m very impressed by your super detailed answers. Super effort. Enjoy the challenge! 🙂

  11. Ok, thank you Mrs Avdiu! ?
I am doing the challenge on the sheet so is it ok if I don’t do it in my book ?.

I could just stick the sheet in my book?

    Have a great day!

    ~ Nika ??

  12. Mrs Avdiu says:

It’s okay, Nika- you don’t need to waste paper (keep it on the sheet). How did you find it?

  13. Hello everyone this is my answer to todays English task:

I think Pog is friendly because in the text it says he helped the girl get back home safely and when she asked who are you he said a friend. He even broke his rules just to help the little girl and the little girl obviously trusted him because she followed him to her house.

I think there was a flutter in Pog’s chest because he felt like he was being a good friend to the little girl who was lost in the forest. Pog had never really had a friend and she also asked if he was lonely which made Pog wonder. But I think he got the flutter in his chest because she had said his name which nobody has said in a long time.

I think Pog was disappointed because the little girl had just left him without saying thanks or goodbye. Also she didn’t even tell her grandparents how she had got back and that Pog helped her also maybe because she didn’t even give him a treat or even a complement.

Thank you Mrs Avdiu for recommending the Pog challenge I did it and it was really fun hope you enjoyed my answer for today.

  14. Mrs Avdiu says:

Thank you for your super detailed answers Claudia! I really like the way you justified your answers by referring to the text. Well done 🙂 I am glad you enjoyed the challenge!

  15. Hi everyone. I hope you enjoyed your weekend. Here are my answers for the grammar today.

    1) Pog is friendly because he helped the girl find her way home and he took care not to loose her too.

    2) Pog felt a flutter in his chest because no one has ever spoken his name before in years.

    3) Pog was disappointed because when the door shut in front of him, he was alone again and he might have wanted to stay with her for a bit longer.

I hope you enjoyed reading my answers.
I’m going to write the challenge in my book. Stay safe everyone. ?

  16. Mrs Avdiu says:

That’s great Renee- enjoy the challenge!

  17. Hello everyone, here are my answers for today’s reading blog.

2). There was a flutter in POG’s chest because the girl said his name and ‘no one had spoken his name in years’.

    On page 5:

  18. Mrs Avdiu says:

  19. I think Pog is a wonderful friend because he helped the girl find her way back from the forest. He also slowed down for her in case he lost her. He even spoke in a really kind and gentle voice to try not to scare her.

There was a flutter on Pog’s chest because he was happy as no one had spoken to him in years.

I think Pog was disappointed because he and the girl were having so much fun, but when the girl returned the fun was over for him.

  20. Hello everyone, I hope you are all well. These are my answers:

    1) I think Pog is friendly and gentle, because the girl laughed with him and smiled. This suggests she likes Pog. She also feels comfortable in his company.
    2) There was fluttering in his chest because the girl said his name, so he was excited as she was the first person to speak his name in years.
    3) Pog felt disappointed as he started to feel lonely again as he had to say goodbye to the girl.

I have also done the comprehension and got 20/23.

    Thank you

    ~ Nika ???

  27. Mrs Avdiu says:

    Yay! 🙂

  28. Hello everyone! I hope that you have had a nice weekend! Here is my comprehension about Pog :
    On page four:
    1. Pog is very friendly and attentive as he proves in many ways such as ” but he took care not to go too fast in case he lost her” or when he accompanies her home and waits there just to make sure the girl arrives safely.

2.Pog feels a fluttering in his chest because no one had said his name in years meaning that he must have been alone for a very long time.
    On page five:
    1. Pog is disappointed because the girl is leaving and he longs for a friend to be there for him and to play with him and when one finally turns up she has to leave. Being with someone else makes him realise quite how sad he is without anyone in his life.

I hope you have a good day, now I am going to do the challenge!

  29. Mrs Avdiu says:

Fantastic answers with excellent reference to the text including quotations. Well done. Good luck with the challenge!

  30. 1. I think Pog is friendly because when the girl got lost he helped her find her way back. In the text it also says ‘ Pog took care not to go to fast unless he lost her ‘ which shows that Pog cares about the girl.

    2. Pog had a fluttering in his chest because no one had spoken his name for years but the girl had just said it.

    3. I think that Pog was disappointed because he wanted to spend more time and have fun with the girl but he couldn’t because she had gone back home and Pog was left alone again.

  31. Mrs Avdiu says:

Hi Theo, how are you? Great references to the text, Theo. Well done! Will you be trying the challenge next?

  32. Thank you. Yes, I’ve done the challenge and we are going to mark it shortly.

  33. Mrs Avdiu says:

    Excellent

  34. Violette says:

Good afternoon Mrs Avdiu and Miss Robertson,
    Here are my answers:

    1) I think Pog is nice. In fact, in the Prologue, we can read, he helps the girl to find her way home. He did not follow the rules just to help the girl and he took care too not lose the girl.

    2) Pog felt a flutter in his chest because he felt like he was being a good friend to the girl and also because the girl pronounced his name. He hadn’t speak to anyone for years, so he felt warm.

    3) Pog was disappointed because the girl closed the door without saying good bye to him or telling him thank you. She didn’t think to invite him inside and she said nothing to her grandad.

I hope I have all the answers correct!! ? ?

  35. Mrs Avdiu says:

Thank you Violette. Please check your spelling for ‘too’ and do you know what ‘speak’ would be in the past tense? As everything else is written in past tense, this words need to be past tense too 🙂

  36. Tommaso says:

    Good afternoon everyone!
    1) I think Pog is friendly as he tells the girl that he his her friend and because he helps her get back home. He also went slow in case he lost her.

    2) Pog felt a flutter in his chest as the girl said his name and no one had spoken his name in years.

    3) I believe Pog was disappointed as he wanted to spend more time with the girl before being all alone again in the forest again.

  37. Mrs Avdiu says:

Well done Tommaso. Next time could you try quoting from the text to improve your answers further? Will you be trying out the challenge? I think you’ll get lots of points!

  38. Mrs Avdiu says:

Hi Jeanne, thanks for submitting your work. I’m very pleased to see you are quoting from the text. Keep up the good work!

  39. Hello everybody

Here are my answers to the comprehension.

    1) I think that Pog is a very friendly creature because he introduces himself as ‘A friend’ to the stranger.

    2) I think that there is a flutter in Pog’s chest because he is not used to people calling him by his name and when the girl calls him by his name he is a bit startled.

    3) I think that Pog is disappointed because he wants to be the girls friend but then the girl goes inside the house and Pog is left with nobody to play with.

I hope you enjoy the rest of your evening.?

  40. Mrs Avdiu says:

Thanks Erin. What does it mean to have a ‘flutter’ in your chest? Why do you think the author chose this word?

  41. 04/05/20
GOOD AFTERNOON MRS AVDIU AND MISS ROBERTSON

    1) I think that POG is friendly because he begins leading the girl back to her home even though he does not know her. In the text is says that ‘POG took care not to go to fast unless he lost her ‘this tells me that POG cares about the girl.
    2) I think that POG had a fluttering in his chest because the girl had said his name and I quote from the text ‘no one had spoken his name in years.’
    3) I think that POG felt disappointed because the girl had to go back to her home and he wanted to spend some more fun time with the girl. Once again, he will be left alone in the forest.
