Adding Fractions…

When we add fractions, if the denominator (the bottom number) is the same, we don’t change it. In this question, both fractions have 7 as their denominator so we know our answer will have 7 as the denominator.

Now we can add the numerators (the top numbers)…

Now we need to write our answer as a mixed number because at the moment it is an improper fraction. That means that the numerator is larger than the denominator. We need to think about how many times 7 goes into 10 because we know 7/7 (seven sevenths) make 1 whole.
7 goes into 10 once so there is 1 whole and 3/7 left over.

Let’s look at one more example together…

This time, our denominator is 9
Our answer is 19/9
9 goes into 19 twice so there are 2 wholes and 1/9 (one ninth) left over.

  19. Worksheets are done. Worksheet 10 was confusing , wouldn’t the “simplest form” be converting the fractions into whole numbers?

  20. Miss Lee says:

    Hello Ajay!
I just had a look at worksheet 10, for some of the questions the answer is written as a mixed number in the simplest form but for some reason for question 2 they are not. I agree with you, the simplest form would usually be 1 2/3 rather than 5/3
I am sure you remember in class, sometimes the answers given by maths no problem answers are questionable! Thank you for letting me know!

  21. I have done it and also the challenge. I am very proud of myself.

  27. Good morning miss Lee!
I have done all the challenges. That is why I am gonna tell you my answers. My answer to question 1 is….
Alex is incorrect because you NEVER add the denominators. I think there are 11 ways to add up to 11 ninths.
They are both correct because Teddy added up everything together and Mo did:
    6/13 + 7/13 = 1 whole
    1 whole + 5/13 = 1 whole and 5/13.

I haven’t checked the answers so I might be wrong.
I think they were kind of easy though (if I got them right).
I also have done the worksheets and tried the extension.
    Thanks, Stella
