Workbook: 5A
Chapter: 3 Multiplication and Division
Lesson: 19 Dividing with Remainder
printer-friendly version:  Wednesday maths blog

Good morning Year 5!

Today’s focus: to divide 3-digit numbers by 1-digit numbers, using long division, short division and mental methods, that give rise to remainders.

As you can see, there are different methods of working it out. The initial question asks us to divide the children into 5 equal groups. Is this possible? Can we divide 376 children into 5 equal groups? Can the 1 remaining person be divided between the 5 groups equally? What if it was not people? What if it was an amount of liquid? Can we divide 1 ml into 5 bottles? Have a think about this…

Here are some useful videos which will remind you how to divide with a remainder:

Once you have watched the videos and completed the worksheet, please consolidate your learning here: Dividing with Remainders

Here is my math question lets see if anyone can work it out:

There are 32 children in a classroom and they all have to be split into 5 groups. How many children will be in each group ?

    Answer:

You divide 32 into 5 which the answer will be 6r2 so……….. there are two answers to the question. There could be 2 groups of seven childern and the rest of 6 or there could be one group of eight children and the rest of 6.
