Today’s Maths Task: To measure the area of shapes.

Good morning, Year 5,

As your parents now have access to Maths No Problem, I will be setting daily worksheets for you to complete at home. They may be worksheets that you may have already attempted in class but that’s okay! It’s important that you revise and practise your skills.

Today you will be practising your skill of measuring the area of shapes.

To work out the area of a square or rectangle, multiply its height by its width.

If the height and width are in cm, the area is shown in cm². If the height and width are in m, the area is shown in m².

Please watch this BBC Bitesize video demonstrating how to measure area.

Here are some common mistakes made when measuring area. Try to avoid these!

Here is another example of how to find the area of several squares. For 1(b),  your understanding of multiplication would help you to find the area of a square with a row of 9 cm².

Today’s task:  Maths No Problem Workbook 5B , Chapter 12, Worksheet 5: Measuring the Area Workbook pages: 139-140
and  Worksheet 6: Measuring the Area Workbook pages: 141-142

You do not need to print these out – you can simply using your yellow books to show your working out and write your answers. You or your parents can then mark it as you now have access to the answers 🙂

Therefore you will not be required to write your answer in the blog comments section as before. Please do comment if you need help or have any questions about the task. Also, please read each other’s comments and help each other out if you can! It is important we stay in touch and talk to each other about maths using mathematical language just like we did in the classroom 🙂

If you finish this activity and would like to learn more maths, please head over to our Home Learning page and scroll down to ‘Maths’ to find more websites you can enjoy. As always, White Rose Maths has daily lessons you can try out.

Good luck!
