Workbook: 5B
Chapter: 13 Volume
Lesson: Mind Workout and Review 13

Year 5,

Well done for your fantastic work on Volume!

I am pleased to read your feedback in the Maths blogs and to see that your confidence in this area is growing. Well done to all of you 🙂

Today you will be attempting this Mind Workout (click to enlarge):

This is a Mind Workout so you may find it difficult at first. Don’t give up! Finding things tricky is a good thing and it helps us to learn. Making mistakes is also part of this journey so don’t feel bad if you make mistakes! I made some when I first tried to work this out myself 🙂

Here is a clue for the calculation you will need to solve this problem:

__ x __ x __ =

Top tip: How many sides does a cuboid have?

Does counting help?

If you have another way, let us know in the answers! If you are struggling, ask your parent for the answer then explain how somebody would get to that answer. It is important that you understand the steps to reach this answer.

You might have a different way to someone else and that’s okay. That’s why it’s a Mind Workout!

After this, please revise your learning of Volume by completing REVIEW 13.

SUPPORT: You can find video lessons on volume here.

What is volume?

CHALLENGE: If you haven’t already, you could try our volume word problem challenge cards

or NRICH volume problems.

Let us know in the comments if you tried any of these!

Marking your answers
As you and your parents now have access to Maths No Problem, I will continue to set daily worksheets for you to complete at home. They may be worksheets that you may have already attempted in class but that’s okay! It’s important that you revise and practise your skills. More information about how to log in to Maths No Problem can be found here.

You do not need to print these worksheets out – you can simply using your yellow books to show your working out and write your answers. You or your parents can then mark it as you now have access to the answers
Therefore you will not be required to write your answer in the blog comments section as before. Please do comment if you need help or have any questions about the task. Also, please read each other’s comments and help each other out if you can! It is important we stay in touch and talk to each other about maths using mathematical language just like we did in the classroom

As it is Thursday, Miss Coleman and Miss Carruthers will kindly respond to the blogs today.

Have a wonderful Bank Holiday Friday tomorrow!

  1. Hello everyone! I hope that you have had a great day so far. I opened my book to this page and found that I have already done it.

It was quite easy for me!!

So I will just carry on yesterdays work and I will try doing some more.

  4. REGAN & ERIN says:

    Hi everybody,
Erin and I ( Regan ) have completed the maths. The challenges are easier than than the MNP books ! However , I think I have a system that works for all of today’s ration questions. The method works for all of yesterday’s questions apart from question 2 ( Worksheet 9 ) We do not understand where they get the 6 from. Please can you explain?
    See you soon!
    – Erin and Regan

  5. Miss Carruthers says:

Hi girls! The challenges are much easier (bizarrely!) so definitely try them first. I’m glad you have worked out a system to answer all teh questions.
Let me try to explain where they get the 6 in q2 of worksheet 9.
To get the tank to be 4 times the bucket, you could have 4 boxes for tank and 1 for bucket. This didn’t work when removing 900ml so they tried different amounts. The one that works is 12 boxes for the tank and 3 for the bucket.
But, when you take out 900ml, the tank has 10 times the amount in the bucket. This means that 900ml is the same as 2 boxes (not 1 as in other questions).
So, when they worked out how much water is in a full tank (which was 12 boxes) they did 900ml x 6, because 900ml is worth two boxes (and half of 12 is 6). They could have done 12 boxes x 450ml. It would give you the same answer.
    Does that make sense?

  6. Hi everyone
I hope you’re all safe and well and I hope you all having a great day
