Happy St. George’s Day, Nursery!

Today is St. George’s Day. St. George is the Patron Saint of England.

St. George was a real person but his story sounds like a traditional tale!

Watch the video to hear the story. You can also read it here:short-stories-british-tales-george-and-the-dragon-transcript

Think about these questions:

Where does it happen?
Who is in the story?
What are they like?
Did you like the story?
Why?

  1. Good morning,

The story happens in a village. There is a Dragon, George on his horse, the animals of the farm, an army, a king and his daughter the princess.
The Dragon breathes fire, he is bad and strong. George is brave and stopped the Dragon from eating the princess. The army is scared. The King couldn’t do anything.
I like the story because I love the princess and I love that George killed the Dragon and saved the princess.

  6. Mrs Knowler says:

Happy St George’s Day everyone. ???????
There is a lot of talk about where the action in the story happened but I think I know. If you ask Mummy or Daddy to Google Dragon Hill, Uffington you can see the special place. You will notice that there is a patch of white chalk. Legend has it that the chalk is where George killed the dragon and no flowers or grass will ever grow there again! I have been there many times, it is a very special place. ?

  7. Thank you Mrs Knowler for you tips!
We could see the hill, but luckily not a dragon 😉
    🙂

  11. Miss Siswick says:

Good Morning, Esme. I don’t know about Our Lady of Lujan, the patron saint of Argentina. Can you tell us a bit about her?

  12. Grace watched this 4 times! Happy St George’s Day!
She said – “it happens in a village, there is a brave knight George, a man (the hemit), a girl – oh yes the princess girl and a dragon. There was an army and village people, they had to give all their food to the dragon and they didn’t want the dragon in their town. I like the dragon when he ate all the animals (!) but George did kill the dragon and he was very brave. He killed him with his sword. I loved the story!

  13. Miss Siswick says:

Well done; Adelaide, Victoire, Alexander, Nicolas, Caspian and Sam. You have remembered so much about the story of St. George. Great listening.

  14. Eloisa did not like the story because the dragon got killed in the end. She felt sad that the dragon had to die. She thought that the story could could have had a kinder ending. George should have tried to make the dragon his friend.

She is going to make a picture of the poor dragon.

  15. Miss Siswick says:

Thank you, Eloisa. The story has got a sad ending. I like your ending more!

  16. Esmeralda says:

Virgin of Luján is the Patroness of Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay
    (3 South American countries)
The history about her is very interesting. Her image was made in Brazil. It arrived at the port of Buenos Aires in 1630 it was supposed to travel to Santiago del Estero (Argentina’s region at the moment, now a province)
The caravan carrying the image stopped at Luján, where the oxen refused to move. Once the crate containing the image was removed, the animals started to move again.
So that’s why people thought it was a miracle.
And nowadays every 8th of may people go walking from Buenos Aires to Luján as a promise to the Virgin.

  17. Miss Siswick says:

Thank you. I have just found out that it is about 90km from Buenos Aires to Lujan so that is a very long walk!

  18. It happened in a forest near the lake. There are lots- George, princess, dragon, king, knights and all the animals. George was a knight he was nice and helpful saving the princess. The dragon was naughty and greedy taking all the gold and coins and ate the little sheep and other animals. I loved the story because George saved the princess and I think they got married. He hit the dragon with his sword.

  19. Miss Siswick says:

Well done, Fiadh. I think that I read somewhere else that they got married at the end.
