Today’s Maths Task: To use scale diagrams to find the perimeter.

Good morning, Year 5
As your parents now have access to Maths No Problem, I will be setting daily worksheets for you to complete at home. They may be worksheets that you may have already attempted in class but that’s okay! It’s important that you revise and practise your skills.

Today you will continue to practise your skill of finding the perimeter of different shapes and using scale diagrams to find the perimeter.

Reminder: To work out the perimeter, you simply have to add (+) up the lengths of ALL the sides.

It’s really important to write down our units while calculating perimeter or we may go wrong!  

Using Scale Diagrams to Find the Perimeter

Sometimes, you may be given a shape like the following, which is not drawn to scale, and asked to find the perimeter:

A rectangle has two long sides that are exactly the same length and two short sides that are exactly the same length, which is why only two measurements are given above. You could then work out the perimeter in any of the following ways:

10 + 4 + 10 + 4             OR           (10 x 2) + (4 x 2)                OR                (10 + 4) x 2

The perimeter of a shape is always calculated by adding up the length of each of the sides.

Here is another example of how to find the perimeter of various 2-D shapes in centimetres and then how to convert from centimetres to metres using the given scale.

Today’s task:  Maths No Problem Workbook 5B , Chapter 12, Worksheet 3: Finding the Perimeter Workbook pages: 135-136

and  Worksheet 4: Using Scale Diagrams to Find the Perimeter Workbook pages: 137-138

 

You do not need to print these out – you can simply using your yellow books to show your working out and write your answers. You or your parents can then mark it as you now have access to the answers 🙂

Therefore you will not be required to write your answer in the blog comments section as before. Please do comment if you need help or have any questions about the task. Also, please read each other’s comments and help each other out if you can! It is important we stay in touch and talk to each other about maths using mathematical language just like we did in the classroom 🙂

  1. Hi hope everyone is well! I have just finished the maths and realised that without printing it up it is almost impossible to get accurate answers without a method we have not learned (Pythagaros ).

    I did these worksheets and my sister marked it and went over the wrong answers that I got and then I eventually understood!

  9. Dear Mrs Avdiu, I don’t know how to calculate some irregular polygons’ perimeters. My dad tells me that we need to use Pythagoras theorem… I am very confused…

    Hi Jeanne, which question are you referring to please? As far as I know you’re finding the perimeter of various 2-D shapes in centimetres and then converting from centimetres to metres using the given scale.

  11. Hi Everyone!!!

    For todays math task I did:
    WorkBook5B
    Chapter 12
    Worksheet 3
    Pages 135-136
    On page 136 I only got 3 of the answers wrong and I went over these answers with my parents. After I understood it, my mum put the same question but with a different shape and I got it right. So now I understand how I went wrong and I can do it right.
    This was quite easy for me and I really enjoyed it 🙂 🙂
