Good Morning, Reception.

I hope you all had a lovely weekend.

Last week, we were practicing the tricky words and the digraphs ‘ch’ and ‘sh’.  Don’t forget to keep looking out for them when you are reading a range of  books.

Today, we are going to practice the digraph ‘th’. A diagraph means two letters together which make one sound.

Practice saying the sound ‘th’ and making the ‘th’ action. There are two ‘th’ sounds which sound slightly different. For words such as ‘this’ and ‘that’, you have to stick your tongue out a little bit like a rude clown. For words like ‘thick’ and ‘thin’, you have to stick your tongue out a lot like a very rude clown!

It is very important that your child learns to stick their tongue out to make both ‘th’ sounds otherwise they sometimes say ‘v’ and ‘f’ for these sounds which makes reading and spelling more difficult.

Here is a video for adults who want to practice making the two different ’th’ sounds: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=h5LO0hHGfQg

Can you read these ‘th’ words?

Can you write these ‘th’ words?

Challenge: Can you think of any more words beginning with ‘th’?
Can you use the words in a sentence?

I know that Geraldine the Giraffe is very popular so here she is learning the ‘th’ sound too! https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=6U354eD-hgQ

I am looking forward to hearing all about your phonics today.
Love from Miss Siswick

PRINTABLE VERSION:R Phonics Monday

It would really help me if you could upload photos  straight to the media file (instructions are here: sharing photos and files) as they get to me more quickly and easily as they don’t have to go via the office and my e-mail. Please can either your child’s name or face (but not both) be visible on any photos. Many thanks.
