This week, we have been taking part in Enterprise Week. We love this week as it is a chance to learn more about business, marketing and money! Whilst we might not have used those words (exactly), we started off our week by thinking about a company name for our product. We knew that our name had to be short and catchy, like other companies such as ‘Disney’ and ‘Lego’. We had some time to discuss our different ideas and eventually voted and chose ‘Sea and LandMarks’ as we were making a range of animals in bookmark-form. We then had a look at different logos from brands that we know, and thought about what we would have to include. We knew that we needed it to be bright and colourful to attract attention, and it also had to be quite simple. As we have been learning about our British Values, we know that democracy is incredibly important, so we once again took a vote on our favourite logo to represent our brand.

Next, we had to think about our advert. This is super important, to ensure that we entice customers and make them want to buy our product! To understand what a good advert includes, we watched an example of an advert from Lego. We really enjoyed this because it was really funny, used lots of bright colours and was quite short too. This makes sure that the customer is engaged! In our English books, we wrote down some of our ideas for our class advert. We came up with our concept and worked together to add ideas to our script and we would prepare for filming the next day!

In maths with Miss Carruthers, we looked at understanding the value of different coins. We used some pretend money to help us with this too. From here, we then looked at ordering coins in terms of their value and then used >, < and = to compare different amounts.

After this, we had a very exciting visit from a parent in our class to tell us all about innovation at Heinz! We learned all about the production of Heinz Beanz and were able to look at the way in which the design has changed over the past 150 years. We also learned about the fact that the clever people at Heinz have completed studies to find out if we can grow or make ketchup in space! Thank you to our special visitor for teaching us so much. This really helped us to understand a little more about the world around us and the jobs and opportunities that are out there!

Then we had such an exciting STEM workshop with Aveea. We learned about the fact that STEM stands for science, technology, engineering and mathematics. In this workshop, we were learning how to make slime! This process started off with glue and we then we added a heaped spoon of sodium bicarbonate. After we had mixed this together, we added some dye to change the colour of our slime. We then had to add borax to make our slime… slime?! We found out that when we add and mix this, an endothermic reaction happens which actually makes the slime really cold. We had to mix and mix, and mix some more and eventually could stretch our slime with our hands. We had such a great time with this and would like to thank Aveea for coming in to teach us! You should definitely have a look at all of our photos of this workshop, they’re great!

After this, we had to film our advert! This was quite a tricky process but we tried really hard to learn our lines and say them with enthusiasm! It was then down to our teacher to edit our clips together, and hope that other children like our advert and our product.

On Wednesday, we had an assembly where we got to watch all of the adverts! This was fantastic and we loved seeing what each class had to offer. Lots of their adverts were funny or catchy! Later this day, we had parents and adults come to help us with making our first bookmarks. We had a great time with them and feel so grateful that they could come and spend this time with us at school. Thank you so much to all adult helpers that came to support Year 2 in our Sea and LandMark experience, we really appreciate it.

On Thursday, we had to make the rest of our products! We had another 60+ orders to make and we tried our best to fold the paper well, and be resourceful with the materials that we had too. We worked well together, showing great reciprocity and resilience too. After all of our orders had been made, we had time to reflect about our Enterprise Week, thinking carefully about the Learning Powers that we had used throughout the week. Today, we sent and received our orders and we were so excited to see what the other classes had made for us!

Thank you so much to everybody at St Vincent’s for their hard work this week. We have had a fantastic time and can’t wait for next year’s!
