This week was Enterprise Week and Year 3 enjoyed becoming the ‘Pencil Case Charm Makers’ company and creating a special product to sell to everyone at our school. The goal was to make as much profit as possible and throughout the week we took part in many activities involving Enterprise, Maths and D.T. as well as opportunities to build our Learning Powers.

On Monday, we designed a company name and logo for our pencil case charms. In table groups we voted for the table’s favourite design and then as a class we voted to choose our overall favourite. This links with our British Value of Democracy as we chose our favourite as a group based on a fair and equal vote. Later on we thought carefully about advertisements and how adverts use special persuasive techniques in their language to influence us to buy a product or service. We watched some examples of adverts an discussed how they stood out to us before writing our own advert which we filmed the next day.

The following day, we practiced writing money in pounds and pence and solving problems involving money. We had to work out the cost of some items sold at a school fete and find the change which would be given from different amounts. Next, we filmed our advertisement for our product. It was lots of fun to think of some creative ideas and persuade our peers to buy our pencil case charms. There was also a special visitor who came to visit us and tell us all about being a Doctor at the University College Hospital. We learnt some responsibilities that doctors have and were even shown some equipment they use in their very important job. Thank you to Mrs Brennan for taking the time to visit and talk to Year 3!

On Wednesday, we continued on with our work on money and practiced using column method to solve multi-step worded problems which was quite tricky but we used our resilience and RUCSAC problem solving process to keep going. It was also time to watch all of the other classes adverts in a special Enterprise Week assembly and later order the products. In the afternoon we spent time making prototypes of our product before the busy making day!

Thursday was the busiest day of the week as it was time to make our products for each class. We received 82 orders in total and luckily lots parents came to help us with the making! Thank you everyone for coming to help us make our charms! It was also a time for reciprocity and resourcefulness so that we could make all of the products on time and ensure we used our resources effectively. We also played a ‘spending spree’ board game with lots of (pretend) money. Each team started with £30 and based on the square they landed had to pay for different items or gained money. The winners were the team with the most money left at the end!

Friday was a time to reflect on our experiences of Enterprise week by completing a reflective writing task and finish filling in our Enterprise Week booklet. We worked out that we had made £52 in profit and we will use this to buy some new games for wet play!
