We have had an excellent first week back at school and everyone has settled into Year 5 so quickly! For our citizenship and locality days, we learned about UNICEF’s convention on the rights of the child and we decided which of the rights were relevant to when we’re at school. We talked about what the rights meant and not only the responsibilities of the adults in enabling access to those rights but also the responsibilities we all share in granting those rights to each other. We also discussed the difference between rules and rights and recognised that rules are in place to ensure we are safe and happy. We used these discussions to create a class charter!

We chose some of the rights that were particularly important to us and everyone signed the class charter by decorating an arm with promises they have made to ensure everyone has access to their rights.

Β To celebrate our locality we studied aerial photographs of Marylebone and we created our own maps with grid references. We learned about how symbols are used in maps and we created our own symbols for places or buildings that we deemed to be significant.

We were introduced to our new class text, ‘Beowulf’ by Michael Morpurgo and we grouped everything we found out about the characters, Grendel and Hrothgar, according to facts we know from the text and inferences we can make about the characters based on evidence in the text. Next week, we’ll be finding out all about Beowulf! In Catholic Social Teaching, we discussed God’s creation and how precious it is. We acknowledged our roles as stewards of the Earth and thought about our responsibilities to protect and care for the world. We imagined we were writing for the school newsletter and wrote articles encouraging readers to make choices that will help look after God’s creation.

Year 5 had an excellent start to the year and I can’t wait to get further into our topics and subjects! Well done Year 5!

  7. I love year five. Mr Aitken is very welcoming to all of us and listens to us as we listen to him. I enjoyed making the class charter as we had to write three important rights to us and colour it in. Mrs Akhtar had a great idea to do kind a like a swirl. The maps was very fun as well and I am enjoying maths. I think my favourite is RE. I enjoy playing on the roof with my friends and doing PE on Wednesday’s. On Tuesdays we go to swimming and we get to dive in the deep end in the pool. I am used to year five and I can’t wait for more fun in this year.
