This week, we were very lucky to visit Garson’s Farm for a very special farm trip. Will met us outside school and some of us remembered him from when he visited a few weeks ago as part of the Growing Schools Project, where we planted on our school roof.

We split into groups and climbed onto the coaches, ready for our journey to the farm. After just over an hour, we arrived and began our exciting day of fruit and vegetable picking. Before we started, we had to think carefully about what we wanted to pick because we will be using our produce to make chutney in the coming weeks.

We were given our punnets and started with beetroot picking. Will showed us how to carefully pull the beetroot from the ground by twisting the leaves and gently lifting it out. We searched carefully for the biggest and ripest beetroots we could find, and some of us even discovered tiny baby beetroots hiding underneath the soil! We also had to make sure we stayed on the paths and walked carefully so that we didn’t step on any of the growing vegetables.

After collecting our beetroots, we carefully took them back to the coaches and travelled to the strawberry fields. The strawberries were growing in long rows inside tunnels. Will taught us how to carefully pick them by holding the stem and choosing only the bright red, juicy strawberries that were ready to eat. We had to leave the green strawberries behind because they still needed more time to grow.

After such a busy morning, we enjoyed a lovely picnic together in the grassy area before heading back to school. It was a fantastic day filled with learning, exploring and getting hands-on experience of where our food comes from.

A huge thank you to Miss Drury for organising such a wonderful trip, to all of our parent helpers for supporting us throughout the day, and to Will for teaching us so much about farming and growing food.

We can’t wait to use our vegetables to make our chutney next week!
