This half term, we have been learning about gymnastics in our Physical Education lessons with Coach Jamie. We know that it is important to warm up before we exercise and this week, Coach Jamie asked us to get into small groups and whenever he said a body part, we had to come up with a way to join together as quickly as we could. This meant that we had to work together, communicate and listen to instructions!

In our first few lessons, we have been learning about six key shapes in gymnastics:

  • Star
  • Straddle
  • Pike
  • Dish/straight
  • Tuck
  • Bridge/back support

We have been learning to link these actions together to create a sequence, a bit like a story that has a beginning, middle and end. We worked on mats with our groups to create our own sequences. Some of us have even shown others how to up-level and improve our bridge position! You might spot some of us doing this in the pictures of our lesson.

More recently, we thought about how we could make a sequence flow, with shapes easily linking together. We used different movements such as rolls and jumps to connect our shapes. We will soon be learning more about balances and how we can hold a balance (which will need good body tension) so that our balances are stable and still. Once we have become more confident with balancing, we will then be able to link these to the shapes that we have been practicing!

We are really enjoying our learning in Physical Education and have worked well with others to create our sequences, which we have then performed to the rest of our friends!

Which three shapes would you put into a sequence together and why?
