Today Green Team had the privilege of planting a tree with TV gardener Alan Titchmarsh, Lord Mayor of Westminster Hamza Taouzzale and Councillor Karen Scarborough. This is part of an initiative by Westminster Trees Trust to ‘green Westminster by planting trees in the streets and public places.’

The tree itself is a Gingko biloba, one of the most ancient trees, seen on Earth over 200 million years ago! It was chosen because it is very hardy, resists damage from insects, fungi and, most importantly, city pollution.

We had the opportunity to ask many questions to both Mr Titchmarsh and the organisers from the Trust. It was very interesting.

After we had finished we were invited to The Durrants Hotel for refreshments. It was lovely. We had scrummy homemade biscuits, fresh apple juice and iced water.

It was such an interesting and fun trip. As a team dedicated to the environment, we felt very proud that we had the opportunity to take part in something so important. You can visit our tree on the corner of Blandford and Manchester Streets. It is going to be interesting to see it grow over the coming years.
