Year 1 had such a fabulous day at Kew Gardens today!

We started off with a big journey there, which the children were so well behaved and sensible for. We walked to the tube and caught the tube all the way to Kew Gardens. Once we arrived we split into two groups to do our workshop with Avi from the Gardens. Avi talked to us about the different seasons, and about which season it is now. She was very impressed that we knew it was Spring. She showed us some of the flowers around the garden, and the trees and described the different colours we could see. She then showed us a Monet artwork and demonstrated how to replicate his style using oil pastels and pencils. The children had a go at drawing some of the treetops, and then we walked through the woodland garden to see the flowers in bloom. We added flowers to our drawings. We also used pencil to create lines and texture throughout our drawings. Everyone’s drawings looked so good!

Next we walked to the Palm House and went inside. We were all shocked at how warm it was and I explained the reason why. It was a very beautiful building.

It was finally time for lunch so we got to sit in the beautiful grass and enjoy our packed lunches (this was lots of children’s favourite part of the day). Luckily there was only a small spot of rain and we had beautiful sunshine for most of our lunch!

After lunch we walked through the gardens to the tree top walk. Students were very excited that they had the chance to go “sky walking”, and I was so impressed with how brave everyone was going up to the top! It was such a cool view from the top and you could also see through the grates down to the ground. Everyone behaved so sensibly, and even wanted to go around again once we had walked around!

Sadly after this it was time to make our way back so we walked through the gardens and back to the tube to get back to school.

I had such an excellent day with Year 1, and was so impressed with everyone on the trip!
