Good Morning Year 4!

I believe we have a birthday in the class today… Check our Mindfulness Blog to see who’s birthday it is and to wish them a Happy Birthday (If we write it on a task blog it might get confusing so all extra messages will always be posted on our mindfulness blog).

On to today’s maths lesson…

We are looking at area and perimeter today.

Perimeter

The perimeter is the distance all the way around the outside of a 2D shape.
To work out the perimeter, add up the lengths of all the sides.

Area

To work out the area of a square or rectangle, multiply its height by its width.
If the height and width are in cm, the area is shown in cm². If the height and width are in
m, the area is shown in m².
A square with sides of 5 m has an area of 25 m², because 5 × 5 = 25.

Have a go at this worksheet by either printing and having a go on the sheet or by writing in your yellow homework book.

Can you calculate the measurements of the rooms in Prospero’s palace?

When you have had a go, practise calculating the area of different shapes by going onto Maths No Problem and doing the following worksheets:

Workbook 4B, Chapter 11, Worksheet 5 and 6.

You can log in to Maths No Problem here.

Look at the image above to help you with area. For area you multiply the two different sides of the shape. So in the first shape, Rectangle A, one side is 3 squares long and another is 2 squares. 3 x 2 = 6 so the area of Rectangle A is 6!

If you need help or have questions then write on the blog and I will be here to help you!

Good luck and have fun!

From Miss Lee.

  1. Hi Miss Lee,

The link to the worksheet does not seem to be working.

  2. Hi William, thank you for letting me know. I have added a picture of the worksheet for you instead.

  3. We know in the first shape, rectangle A, one side is three squares long and another is two 2 squares.
For the second question it says that 4 square units in 1 row but there are three rows so 3*4=12

  4. Good work! Can you try the maths no problem pages?

  5. I completed the exercise and put the sheets in a folder.

  6. 3×2=6 the area for rectangle A is 6
    ————————————————
3×4=12 the area for rectangle B is 12.

  7. Done task in my yellow book

  8. Well done Albert!

  9. I have done the 6 exercises for perimeter and 2 for the area. However could you please explain why the result is m^2 or cm^2 or squared units Miss Lee?

    Answers in mts perimeter :
    26 Bedroom
    26 Entrance
    38 Kitchen
    84 Swimming pool
    30 hallway

    Area in square units :
    6
    12

  10. Great work Rafael well done!
Yes of course, it is only squared units when we work out the area. This is because the area measures the inside of the shape and it is measured in the number of squared required to cover the entire area. Think of it like tiles on the floor.
We used squared units because the area is of a two-dimensional shape.
We do not use squared units to measure length because lines have no area.

I hope that makes sense? Please tell me if you need further explaining! A good question to ask, well done!

    Good morning Miss Lee
    Rectangle b is 12 because 4 x 3 =12

  12. Hello girls!
Good work, can you do the maths no problem worksheets?

  13. Hi Miss,we don’t have the login for math no problem ,and also the link to the worksheet is not working .
    Thanks

  14. Hi Amarissa, your mum should have got an email with details of how to log in yesterday.
You can follow the instructions here:
    https://www.stvincentsprimary.org.uk/news/accessing-maths-no-problem/

  15. The first shape is 6 units because it is 2 units tall and 3 units long, 2×3=6.

The second shape is 12 units because it is 3 units tall and 4 units long, 3×4=12

  16. Good work Raimundo, can you try the maths no problem pages?

  17. Dear Miss Lee – we cannot also find the worksheets…thank you

  18. Which worksheets are you struggling to find Paolo?

    Hi miss Lee!
I have done my math no-problem pages in my yellow book.
I have also written the exersise in my yellow book.
Should I write it on the blog?

I cannot find the reading blog.
    Can you help?
I have already went on the year 4 archives and I could not find it there, so yesterday and today I could not write in it.
Do you have a clue of where it can be?
    Thank you.

  20. Hi Stella, well done for doing the maths no problem pages! As long as you have done it that is fine!
Here is a link to the reading blog:

  29. Hi Miss Lee ?
I have calculated and measured the rooms in Prospero’s palace.
    1. Bedroom 4m + 9m = 13m × 2 = 26m
    2. Entrance way 5m + 8m = 13m × 2 = 26m
    3. Kitchen 5m + 10m + 4m = 19m × 2 = 38m
    4. Room 3 + 4 = 7 × 2 = 14cm
    5. Swimming pool 23m + 19m = 42m × 2 = 84m
    6. Hallway 13m + 2m = 15m × 2 = 30m perimeter and the area is 13m × 2 = 26m
I have also done the maths no problem in my yellow book!
