Workbook: 5B
Chapter: 13 Volume
Lesson: 7 and 8 Converting Units of Volume

Good morning Year 5,

Today you will be converting units of volume.

Let’s think about the following problem…

Elliot needs to pick up some milk for his mother but he is not sure how much he should get:

To work out 2 pints of milk, you need to remember that 1 pint is about 568ml, so 2 pints would be double that.

SUPPORT: Converting litres and pints.

If you have counters or other small objects at home, you could make the amount for 2 pints and then add them together. Once you have a total, you could separate it into groups of 500 and 200 to work out the above problem.

These questions would help me in solving the above: What amounts do the milk containers come in? So what containers should he get for his mother? Could partitioning help? How many 500-ml containers should he buy? How much is left? How many containers will he need in total?

Here is a demonstration of how to answer:

We can use rounding to work out how much milk Elliott needs to buy. To what number can we round 568? 500 would be easier to double! Would we still need to buy the same number of cartons of milk?

MORE SUPPORT: Converting Units

CHALLENGE:

A 500-ml carton costs 75 p and a 250-ml carton costs 60 p. Would I be better off buying a combination of 500-ml and 250-ml cartons or buying only 500-ml cartons? Explain your thinking.

Marking your answers
As you and your parents now have access to Maths No Problem, I will continue to set daily worksheets for you to complete at home. They may be worksheets that you may have already attempted in class but that’s okay! It’s important that you revise and practise your skills. More information about how to log in to Maths No Problem can be found here.

You do not need to print these worksheets out – you can simply using your yellow books to show your working out and write your answers. You or your parents can then mark it as you now have access to the answers

Therefore you will not be required to write your answer in the blog comments section as before. Please do comment if you need help or have any questions about the task. Also, please read each other’s comments and help each other out if you can! It is important we stay in touch and talk to each other about maths using mathematical language just like we did in the classroom

Good luck!

Mrs Avdiu & Ms Robertson

    Good Morning everyone!
I found today’s maths quite easy.
I hope you all have a nice day.

  2. Good morning everyone. I found worksheet 7 a little harder than 8 but apart from that it was alright. The only thing I don’t understand are pints.

  3. Mrs Avdiu says:

Thank you Claudia. What is it that you don’t understand? Is there anything we can help with?

  4. Mrs Avdiu says:

Thank you Claudia. What is it that you don’t understand? Is there anything we can help with?
P.S.: I edited your comment and included the full stops. Please could you check your punctuation before submitting a comment as it can be quite hard to read 🙂
Your original comment was: Good morning everyone I found worksheet 7 a little harder than 8 but apart from that it was alright the only thing I don’t understand are pints.
Please compare this to the one I have edited for you so you can see where the full stops should go 🙂 Hope that is helpful!

  5. Mathilde says:

Good morning I hope you are having a great day I found this a little hard because I didn’t understand what pints are but then my mom explained what pints are and I enjoyed working the rest out .

  6. Mrs Avdiu says:

That’s great, Mathilde! Well done for persevering!

  7. Good morning everyone.
I finished the maths no problem and struggled a bit with converting three quarters of pints into millilitres. However after a few attempts I got it right. I had a go at the challenge. I think you would be better off buying 2 500ml cartons of milk as it would only cost 15p more than buying 500ml and 250 ml.
I hope you enjoy the rest of your day!

  8. Hi Mrs Avdiu and Miss Robertson,
I did today’s math’s and I also did the challenge as you can see below.

    CHALLENGE:
    500 ml = 75 p which is equivalent to £1.50 per litre
    250 ml = 60 p which is equivalent to £2.40 per litre
Therefore the 500 ml cartons are better value

  9. It is better to buy the big cartons because if you buy one big carton it is 500ml and it only costs 75p but if you buy 2 small ones you would still get 500ml and it would cost £1.20.
The most important thing is not the overall cost it is the price per litre or price per unit.

  10. Me and Ms Travers have been working on the worksheets. We are stuck on the second page pg 167 of the first worksheet , question d.

  11. Mrs Avdiu says:

Hi Elsa, let me have a look…

  12. Mrs Avdiu says:

Hi Elsa, first you need to look at the third jug and convert it from fractions to decimals. This should help you to work it out the same way as you did for the others 🙂 Once you have added the three together you will get 5.5 pints. You then need to convert this to litres. Remember, it is asking you to ‘estimate’ to the nearest 0.1l

  13. Hi everyone! I hope you are all keeping okay!

I found these questions a lot harder than yesterday but my dad and sister explained it to me! 😀

I hope you all have a great day!
    Kayla 😀

  14. Mrs Avdiu says:

Elena, thank you for sending in photos of your work. You are doing great! Keep up the good work and make sure you always check your answers 🙂

  15. Hello everyone! I hope that you have had a great day so far! For today’s maths task, I struggled quite a bit and it took me a long time to work some of the questions.

I found worksheet 8 harder than worksheet 7. My mum helped me but I am still struggling.

Me when I found out what the answer was: ??????

    Me when I finished: ??????????

    Have a nice day!

    ~ Nika ???
